If your dog's bed cover takes a whole day to dry on the bamboo pole, and your dog spends that day sulking on the tiles, the fix is not a dryer or a second bed. It is a second cover. One zips on while the other washes, so the bed is never out of action and you stop putting off washday because of the hassle.
Why washday is harder in Singapore
A dog bed cover is a thick piece of fabric with a zip and, usually, a bolster sleeve. In a dry climate you could wash it in the morning and have it back on by evening. Here, with the air this humid, a microsuede cover hung in the corridor or on the service yard rack can still be damp at bedtime. Hang it out during the rainy season and it can take two days.
Most homes in Singapore do not have a tumble dryer, and even if yours does, a thick cover is best dried on low or flat, which takes time. So the real cost of washing the bed is not the detergent. It is the day or more your dog has nowhere proper to sleep.
What usually happens next is predictable. You skip a week. Then another. The bed starts to smell of dog, the dog starts to smell of bed, and the sofa suddenly looks more inviting to them than their own spot.
What a spare cover actually changes
- Zero downtime. Strip the dirty cover, zip on the clean one, and the bed is back in use in five minutes. The washing happens on its own schedule.
- You wash more often. Once washing stops costing your dog their bed, a fortnightly wash becomes realistic. Fur, dander and the dust that drifts in during the haze come off before they settle in.
- Night-time accidents stop being a crisis. A puppy, a senior dog or a dog recovering from surgery can wet the bed at 2 am. With a spare, you swap and go back to sleep.
- Both covers last longer. Two covers share the wash cycles, so each one wears more slowly. Microsuede holds up well, but every cycle is wear.
- You get a second colour. If the bed is Cream, a Charcoal Gray spare means you can change the look of the living room for the price of a cover.
Check these before you buy any spare cover
Not every bed sells covers separately, and not every spare fits the way the original did. Before you pay for one, check:
- It is cut for your exact bed and size. A "universal" cover will bunch at the corners and shift when your dog circles. Match the brand, the model and the size on your current cover.
- The same fabric as the original. If the spare is a cheaper material, your dog will notice and so will you after three washes.
- What stays on the foam. The best setups have a separate water-resistant liner that stays zipped on the foam, so the foam is never bare while the cover is off. If the cover is the only layer, a spill on swap day goes straight into the foam.
- A hidden or covered zipper. Exposed zips get chewed, and they scratch tiles when the bed gets dragged across the room.
- Machine washable on a cold gentle cycle. Hand-wash-only covers are a promise you will not keep.
What it costs compared with the alternatives
The honest comparison is not "spare cover versus nothing". It is "spare cover versus what you would otherwise do". Here is how it stacks up using Mitodo Kumo prices.
| Option | Small | Medium | Large | Downside |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mitodo Kumo Bed Extra Cover on its own (10% off at checkout) | S$54 | S$72 | S$81 | None, if you already own the bed |
| Kumo Bed + Spare Cover Set (new bed with a spare) | S$201 | S$265 | S$322 | Only makes sense if you are buying the bed anyway |
| Bed now, spare cover later (separate orders) | S$213 | S$281 | S$340 | S$12 to S$18 more than the set |
| A second whole bed | S$159 | S$209 | S$259 | Takes up a second footprint in a small flat |
| Replacing a smelly bed every year or two | Whatever a new bed costs | The foam was probably fine; only the cover was tired | ||
The set price already includes the discount. If you put a bed and a spare cover in the same order, the cover is discounted too, and your cart shows the exact price. A spare cover is the smallest of these numbers and the only one that solves the actual problem, which is drying time, not the bed.
A washday routine that works with two covers
- Strip and shake outside. Unzip the cover and shake it over the corridor or at the window to drop loose fur before it clogs the machine filter.
- Zip on the spare straight away. Check the liner underneath for marks and wipe it with a damp cloth and mild detergent if needed. Do not machine wash the liner or the foam.
- Wash cold, gentle, mild detergent. Skip fabric softener; it coats microsuede and leaves it feeling flat. Skip hot water; it can shrink a cover so it no longer zips shut.
- Dry flat or tumble low. Flat on a rack in the service yard with the fan on is fine. Flip it once. Give it until it is fully dry, not "dry enough", before it goes back in the cupboard. A damp cover folded away is how you get that mildew smell.
- Rotate. Next washday, the cover that is on comes off and the one in the cupboard goes on. Both age evenly.
How often? For most dogs, every two weeks is a sensible rhythm, weekly if your dog is a heavy shedder, has itchy skin or has been rolling at the dog run. We have a longer guide on washing frequency in the "Read next" list.
Why we built Kumo with a swappable cover
When we were designing the Mitodo Kumo bed, we watched what happened in our own flat on washday. Waffle, Mantou and Brownie would stand next to the bare foam looking personally offended. So the Kumo was built in three separate layers from the start: the outer OEKO-TEX® microsuede cover, a water-resistant liner with its own zipper, and the foam. The cover comes off along a hidden zipper, the liner stays on the foam and keeps guarding it, and a spare cover zips on in a minute.
The Kumo Bed Extra Covers are the same microsuede as the original, made from OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified fabric, cut to fit snugly over the shredded-foam bolsters so your dog keeps the same raised edge to lean on. They come in Cream and Charcoal Gray in Small, Medium and Large, and they machine wash on a cold gentle cycle like the one you already have. If you are buying the bed now, the Kumo Bed + Spare Cover Set puts the two together from S$201 for a Small, which is cheaper than buying them one after the other. Free delivery in Singapore on orders from S$45, dispatched in 1–3 working days.
The thing to do today: check whether your dog's bed cover actually comes off, and if it does, look at the size and order a spare in whichever colour you have been curious about. Next washday will take five minutes of your dog's time instead of a day.
